Introduction
In recent years, vaping has surged in popularity, especially among adolescents and young adults. Often marketed as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, e-cigarettes have become a subject of intense debate concerning their health implications. This investigatory project seeks to explore the impacts of vaping, particularly focusing on the chemical composition of vaping liquids and their potential health consequences.

The primary ingredients in most vaping products include nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and flavoring agents. While nicotine is the addictive component found in tobacco, propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin serve as base liquids. These substances are generally recognized as safe for ingestion, but their long-term effects when inhaled are still uncertain.
To investigate the effects of vape inhalation, this project employed both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Through a series of experiments, we analyzed various vaping liquids to identify their chemical components using gas chromatography. This method enabled us to separate and quantify the different substances contained in each e-liquid sample.
In addition to the chemical analysis, surveys were distributed to a demographic of high school students aged 15-18 to gauge their perceptions and usage patterns regarding vaping. The survey revealed that 70% of respondents had tried vaping, and among them, 60% believed that vaping was less harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes. However, this misconception could have dire consequences for their health.
The results from the chemical analysis showed that many vaping liquids contained harmful additives, including diacetyl—a substance linked to ‘popcorn lung’—a serious respiratory condition. Furthermore, some samples contained high levels of heavy metals, which can originate from the heating elements of the devices. These findings underscore the significant health risks associated with vaping that are often overlooked by consumers.
